How good is “Good Shepherd Preschool”?
Good Shepherd Preschool has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) since 1996. The most recent NAEYC re-accreditation took place in Spring of 2010. Not only was the reaccreditation granted, but the visiting team was uniformly enthusiastic and congratulatory about all aspects of the program. Good Shepherd Preschool has also been awarded 5 stars by the Vermont Step Ahead Recognition System (STARS), which is Vermont’s recognition of quality preschool education. The “5 stars” is the highest possible rating. Very few preschools maintain both of these credentials.


What is the child/teacher ratio?
The Child to Teacher ratio never exceeds 6:1 for the T/TH class and 8:1 for the M/W/F class.

What kind of education program does Good Shepherd offer?
The curriculum is play-based and aimed at developing social, cognitive, emotional, creative, physical and reasoning skills that are essential to maximize both performance and happiness in kindergarten and beyond. It emphasizes the appreciation of nature and the need to treat our environment gently. We recognize the importance of the outdoors on each aspect of your child’s development. Moreover, the curriculum is guided by a respect for the spiritual side of life, especially as spirit is expressed in thoughtful decisions that consider the consequences of our actions on other people.

How long is the day and how much does it cost?

Classes meet in the mornings from 8:30 to 12:00. The 3-4 year old class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the cost is $1665 for the school year. The 4-5 year old class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The cost for this class is $2470 for the school year. Tuition is payable in installments.

 

Are scholarships available?

Yes, scholarships are available based on financial need.

What is Good Shepherd Preschool’s relationship to the church?
Good Shepherd Preschool, sponsored by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, was established in 1973 to answer an expressed need for kindergarten in the Mount Mansfield area.  When public kindergarten was established, Good Shepherd continued as a preschool.  It is a non-profit entity dependent on tuition. The Preschool is guided by Christian principles, foremost among which is an unconditional commitment to the welfare of the students placed under its care. We welcome children of all faiths, and those whose families do not profess any faith.


How does the Preschool celebrate holidays?
At Good Shepherd Preschool our goal is to create a non-biased environment that reflects the cultures of all of our families, including holidays and special day celebrations.  Part of our curriculum is to learn to respect, value, and explore the differences as well as the similarities among us.  We want to appreciate the experiences of each family, and we strive to use celebration as just one way to connect home and school.

 

Does Good Shepherd Preschool require parent involvement?

Yes, parents participate in various aspects of the school. We feel it is critical for families to be involved in their child’s education, and we encourage parents/guardians to partner with us.  We offer several ways in which to do this. Most parents find that being involved in their child’s school not only fosters a sense of ownership and pride in the school, but also encourages friendships and a strong sense of community.
